What happened to buoy in Astoria or?

In Astoria, Oregon, buoy 10 has been a long-standing fixture of the Columbia River Estuary, standing sentinel over the river since 1895. The buoy was removed in 2009 due to lack of maintenance and an unexpected need for some emergency repair work.

The cost of any repairs that would have been required along with the replacement costs for the damaged system, parts, and labor proved to be too high for the Corps of Engineers who control the buoy’s operation.

A decision was made to leave it in place but not operational, as the Corps felt that any repair work on the buoy would be too costly and the potential for additional damage too great.

The Bar Pilots, who rely on the buoys to guide their boats in and out of the harbor, have been impacted by the lack of buoy 10’s presence. The series of buoys used by Pilots were moved further downstream to make up for the navigational gap in the harbor that the removal of the buoy created.

This caused port traffic to slow down, ships to be delayed, and a shift of around $900,000 away from the port’s activity.

A permanent replacement for the destroyed buoy is yet to be formally decided upon. In the meantime, activists and the Oregon State Marine Board are discussing various replacements, including a clump of anchors at the near the buoy’s former location to guide ships and support the re-location of the other buoys.
